Private insurance may cover all or parts of the cost of our Speech and Language Pathologists (SLP), Occupational Therapists (OT) and our Psychological services.

FAMILY SUPPORT FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

FSCD Eligibility Criteria

Age/Residency Criteria

  • Child must be under 18 yrs old and reside in Alberta
  • Child must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident
  • The individual applying for the program must be the child’s guardian

Disability Criteria

  • Medical documents must be provided, confirming that the child has a disability or is waiting for a diagnosis
  • The diagnosis for a disability must:
    • Be chronic
    • Be a developmental, physical, sensory, mental or neurological condition or impairment
    • Health conditions that impacts the individual’s daily living activities such as eating, grooming, walking, interacting with other people, playing or problem solving

After Applying

  • Disability services will review the information provided to them through the application to determine if the child is eligible or not
  • If you are eligible, the FSCD file will be forwarded to your local FSCD office for a disability services worker to be assigned

What is covered?

  • Responds to unmet needs of First Nations children in Canada
  • Informs families about the support available for their child
  • Coordinates access to products, services and supports
  • Provides funding where needed

What is funded?

  • Every child’s case is unique, although funding can support a wide range of health, disability, social, and educational needs

Who is covered?

  • Children who are registered or eligible to be registered under the Indian Act
  • Has one parent/guardian who is registered or eligible to be registered under the Indian Act
  • Recognized by their nation for the purposes of Jordan’s principle
  • A child under the age of majority (18 in Alberta) in their province or territory of residence.
  • Is ordinarily resident on reserve
  • An authorized representative of the child can send a request about an application for Jordan’s principle

How to submit a request?

  • Jordan’s Principle call center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Through the Government of Canada’s website regarding Jordan’s Principle, there are online forms to begin the process

DISABILITY TAX CREDIT

What is it?

 

  • A non-refundable tax credit to support parents and families by reducing the amount of income tax they may have to pay (helps to off-set other disability related expenses)

 

 

Who is eligible?

 

  • Individuals with severe, prolonged impairment in physical or mental function
